MP-Gaming's News Feed
Uh yeah so I have bagged myself 1 of 200 places working at CERN as a developer for a year. I am not sure if I am allowed to say what I will be doing as I don’t have the contract as of yet but when I do get it I’ll post more.
It hasn’t really sunk in yet to be honest and probably won’t until I am actually there working with people from Harvard, Cambridge, Oxford, MIT etc. Ironically I think there are 3 Staffordshire University students going out there, including myself. As far as I am aware this is quite a significant number and the uni seem excited about it. I have also been given permission to ditch a placement I had already secured due to the exceptional circumstances which is pretty cool of them because they don’t have to do that.
Anyway, whilst I am out there I will write a blog on MP-Gaming and disclose what I am allowed to. My day to day tasks will consist of developing applications using C++ with state of the art technology. When I say state of the art I mean it quite literally. During my video interview with a Dr of Physics I was shown a short presentation which included some hardware I have never even heard of. I won’t go into massive detail as again I don’t want to ruin it before I even start but it was the next generation of networking technology. He even laughed when I looked puzzled and explained what it was to me.
What I will be working on is something that will be released and made available as far as I have been told. It really is cutting edge and something that I have been told is impossible. This is obviously a lie and just goes to show what some lecturers actually know “COUGH”. I wish I could say directly what it is because it really is incredible.
The interview itself was really great and the questions were spot on. As for a bit of advice (I feel old now...) if anyone else goes for something like this answer the questions and give examples of where you have used it or how you would use it. This is what he said separated me from the other students he had interviewed. Apparently most students just either reeled off a load of bollocks or explained the theory behind it. Also don’t be afraid to say no, he liked that as well.
On a closing statement I really can’t believe I am going to be doing this. 3 years ago I was in a job I hated and working with retards. Compared with in a few months time I will be at probably the best placement on the planet and have a CERN reference on my CV. I would say I don’t like to brag but I’d be a liar really. I mean who wouldn’t?

Just be sure not to accidentally press any wrong buttons when you're there, we don't want a black hole to swallow our precious planet |

Congrats, oxi! I hope you find that line of work more interesting than I did. Personally I found it a tad boring and dry, but maybe it was just my research group. |

Wow, that is rather cool oxi (bit of an understatement.) Congratulations. But now you've gone and got us all really curious about what this new technology is. Good luck and will look forward to reading your blog. |

Damn dude, well done! I'm coming to the end of my degree now and I would kill for a year at CERN! As it turns out I have literally not a clue what I want to do when i finish, but hats off to you for this! And thanks for the advice |
